The new-look Eagles got through their first week with a win and no significant injuries.

This group – especially the offensive line – is a week older and hopefully a week wiser.

Right guard Kyle DeVan, who was an Eagle a total of about one week before he was thrust into the starting line against the St. Louis Rams, said even after just one week, his assignments were becoming much clearer.

“It was a very fast week,” DeVan said. “Every day we did something new that the guys were accustomed to that was all new for me. Now that I’ve got that down, it makes the game a lot easier. I can play a lot faster because I know what to expect. A lot of the plays were the first time I’d heard how they are called in the huddle. Now that I’ve got that down, this week’s going to be a lot smoother. Todd (Herremans) last week, was helping me with the plays. This week we’re taking a step forward and we’re going to be able to play much faster, so I am excited.”

The Eagles (1-0) take on the Atlanta Falcons (0-1) this Sunday night at 8:20 p.m. on national network television (NBC).

Andy Reid was asked if he was happy with the chemistry his offensive line showed last Sunday.

“Yeah listen, I’m going to tell you this about everybody, we have to get better at all the positions,” Reid said at his weekly press conference. “But they did okay, they did alright. Can we get better? Absolutely, and I think they’ll do that as the weeks go on. They’ll continue to grow and get better. They have a huge challenge this week so they have their work cut out for them looking at the tape and studying and doing all of the things that they need to do to prepare.”

The Falcons, despite getting hammered by the Chicago Bears 30-12 last week, still had two sacks against Jay Cutler, both by defensive end John Abraham who has 104.5 sacks for his career.

DeVan said the Eagles were not looking at the score of the Falcons game last week, rather the talent Atlanta will put on the field Sunday night.

“They are one of the best in the league,” the 6-foot-2, 306 pounder said. “They’re big, fast and physical. When you can have a defensive line like Atlanta’s … not only are they big guys, they move, they get off the ball and rush the passer. It is a challenge for us.”

The Eagles defense will be tested by one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL. Matt Ryan has posted a 100-plus rating 16 times in his young career and the Falcons 16-0 in those games. Ryan has posted an impressive 20-2 (.909) record at home with 32 touchdown passes vs. 12 interceptions.

Standout running back Michael Turner has rushed for 2,048 yards and 24 touchdowns in 21 home games since coming to Atlanta in 2008.

Defensive End Trent Coles says and good early start is important, especially against the Falcons.

“We always want to get off on a fast start,” Cole said. “We want to get going as fast as we can. They were the No. 1 seeded team last year (in the playoffs). They are a great team and we’ve got to watch out, we have to go in there and play sound football.”

This will be Mike Vick’s first appearance in Atlanta as the starter for the Eagles. In 2009 Vick was in his first year with

the Birds after spending over two years in jail for promoting dog fighting.

He was in for a few plays but was a non-factor other than the interest he was back in the league and in Atlanta for the first time.

The 6-0, 215 pound signal caller who rushed for 97 yards on 11 carries in the Eagles 31-13 win over the Rams in the season opener last week, was asked what he expected to hear from Falcons fans when he enters the field.

“I don’t know,” Vick said at his locker Wednesday. “That’s something I haven’t thought about. I really don’t want to get into it. I still have a lot of love for the fans down there but keep in mind I am now with the opposition now. I don’t expect it to be in my favor.”
