EAGLES TRADE MCNABB TO REDSKINS

Donovan McNabb will be scrambling for the Redskins in 2010.

The Eagles ended months of speculation Sunday night when the team announced it traded longtime quarterback Donovan McNabb to Washington Redskins for a second round draft choice (37th overall) in 2010 and either a third or fourth round draft pick in 2011.

“Donovan McNabb was more than a franchise quarterback for this team,” said Eagles Chairman Jeffrey Lurie said in a statement released by the team. “He truly embodied all of the attributes of a great quarterback and of a great person. He has been an excellent representative of this organization and the entire National Football League both on and off the field. I look forward to honoring him as of the greatest Eagles of all-time and hopefully see in enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton one day. I wish Donovan and his beautiful family great health and joy for many, many years to come.”

Reid hosted a late Sunday evening press conference and said the move was tough on him and the organization because the group had been together for 11 years.

“It was tough on all of us,” Reid said. “As far as myself, I was very close to Donovan. I remain close to Donovan. That part won’t change. You can’t erase the last 11 years. We had 11 great years together and I know he will go on and have success in the remaining part of his career.”

McNabb, the Eagles first round draft pick in 1999 out of Syracuse, earned six Pro Bowl selections as an Eagle and finished as the franchise’s all-time leader in passing yards, touchdown passes, pass attempts, and completions.

Reid said McNabb is the greatest quarterback in Eagles history.

“He is a future Hall of Famer.” Reid said.

By trading his once franchise quarterback, Reid handed the ball over to fourth-year player Kevin Kolb, a second round pick out of Houston.

Reid was asked if Kolb is good enough to lead the Eagles to a Super Bowl.

“I don’t have a crystal ball here,” Reid said. “I think Kevin now needs to go prove that. And be Kevin Kolb, not Donovan McNabb. He needs to make his own mark and be his own man. He has not done that…that’s something that will be a great challenge for him coming up this year. Everything else is subjective decisions on my part that I have the confidence in him to do this.”

With the acquisition of Washington’s 2nd round draft pick this year, the Eagles now have 11 total selections in this year’s draft: 1st round (24th overall), 2nd round (37, from Washington), 2nd round (55), 3rd round (70, fromSeattle), 3rd round (87), 4th round (105, from Cleveland), 4th round (121), 5th round (137, from Cleveland), 6th round (200, from Indianapolis), 7th round (243, compensatory pick), and 7th round (244, compensatory pick).’
Eagles fans better hope their team strikes gold in the draft this year. Since the Birds, suffered back-to-back losses to the Dallas Cowboys to end the season, they have purged their roster on both sides of the ball.

Reid would not say his team is a contender this season.

“We’ll see,” Reid said. “We’re sitting here Easter Sunday…and I don’t think the season starts for quite a while. So well see down the road how things come together and I think we’ll be a pretty good team when it is all said and done.”
