DESPITE LOSS TO COWBOYS, EAGLES EAGER FOR PLAYOFFS

Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb was acked six times by the Cowboys.

Last night the Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys played a game that lived up to its billing as a “Meaningless game.”

With Andy Reid resting most of his key players and the Cowboys down to their third-string quarterback; it was a game that season ticket holders most likely gave their seats to their butcher or mailman.

The result was a 14-13 Cowboys win that had no bearing on when, where or who they would face in the Wild Card round to take place at Lincoln Financial Field Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

The Eagles (10-6) will take on the Green Bay Packers (10-6) – winners over the Chicago Bears Sunday (11-5).
Once the Packers game ended, it made winning efforts by the New York Giants (over Washington) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (over the New Orleans Saints) as meaningless as the Eagles game.

Turnovers, dropped passes, defensive lapses, bad blocking and tackling left any observers with all the evidence he or she needed to understand why the guys on the field yesterday are backups.

You should, however, give a pass to Eagles quarterback Kevin Kolb. Working with Chad Hall, Riley Cooper, Clay Harbor, Jerome Harrison and Eldra Buckley is not quite the same as having DeSean Jackson, LeSean McCoy, Brent Celek and Jeremy Maclin as your weapons.

Kolb blamed himself despite getting poor protection. His fumble in the second quarter was returned 17 yards by DeMarcus Ware for a touchdown.

“Well as a quarterback you have to learn to trust the protection no matter what,” said Kolb, who finished 18 of 36 for 162 yards, one TD pass, three interceptions and was sacked a whopping six times. “The plays I missed had nothing to do with that. So it starts with me. It starts with the quarterback position and you just have to step up and try and sling it every time. I would say it was more getting a feel for the game than it was feeling the rush.”

Harbor dropped a pass on the opening drive of the third quarter that was so wide open, so easy, he will likely hear about it from teammates and fans for as long as he wears an Eagles uniform.

And Cowboys receiver Roy Williams attempted to catch a Stephen McGee pass in the third quarter…one of the Cowboys major underachievers this season bobbled the ball so many times before finally dropping it, then kicked it; making the play one that will live on forever in the NFL football follies. It was nothing short of hilarious.

Williams was asked if he had played his last game in a Dallas uniform.

“I do not know but I think you have to ask Jerry Jones that question,” said Williams, who had one catch for six yards against an Eagles defense that featured mostly backups. “It is not my answer to answer that question. I will prepare the same way during the off season and could be here or somewhere else. It is up to Jerry Jones whether I will be a Cowboy or not.”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked if he had made a decision on who his next coach would be. Jones fired Wade Phillips after the Cowboys got off to a 1-7 start. Interim head coach Jason Garrett guided the team to a 5-3 record in the second half of the season.

“I think I could make the decision tonight but I may just wait until the morning,” Jones said outside the Cowboys locker room after the game. “We should have a decision on the coach before the end of the season.”

But all anyone in the Eagles locker room wanted to talk about was next week.

“Since the beginning, [the playoffs] has been the goal,” said safety Quintin Mikell, who did not see any action against Dallas. “It’s exciting. The regular season is over, everybody’s going to be watching us next week. This is what you play for, se we’re excited right now.”

Center Mike McGlynn said the team was excited about getting another chance to play the Packers, especially since Green Bay defeated the Eagles 27-20 in the season opener.

“I think we’re excited about playing against anybody in the playoffs,” McGlynn said. “But the Packers got the best of us in the first game of the season and I’m excited to get another shot at them.”

Several players were asked if the Eagles were ready for the playoffs despite two straight losses to teams fielding a third string quarterback.

“We have to be ready,” cornerback Dimitri Patterson said. “There is no other option.”
