The Giants continued to shuffle players on their offensive line today, signing tackle Adam Gress and placing tackle Troy Kropog on injured reserve.
Gress, 6-7 and 300 pounds, is a rookie free agent from Penn State, where he played in 32 career games with 12 starts. As a senior in 2013, he started eight games as part of a three-man tackle rotation with Gary Gilliam and Donovan Smith.
Second-year offensive tackle Justin Pugh said the Giants linemen are cognizant of maintaining the franchise’s traditionally strong play up front in the wake of Chris Snee’s retirement last week.
“We definitely have to step up,” Pugh said. “I think just from the way we played last year, it is obvious that we have to step up and play well, protect the quarterback. Obviously, there’s that tradition that’s been there with those guys and them not being here…”
The Back-to-Back American Conference Champion Philadelphia Soul (9-9) will attempt to make their third consecutive trip to the ArenaBowl when they kick off the 2014 Playoffs this Saturday, August 2 at the Quicken Loans Arena against the Cleveland Gladiators (17-1) at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network.

Midway through the workout at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center, the players headed en masse to the field house to drink water or Gatorade and to cool off. At the conclusion of the five-minute hydration period the players returned to the outdoor field and resumed practice.
Several players had to leave the opening practice yesterday with heat-related issues. A breeze and cloud cover made it cooler today, but Coughlin kept the break on the schedule.
Lane Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles has been suspended without pay for the first four games of the 2014 regular season for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances.
Johnson will be eligible to return to the Eagles’ active roster on Monday, September 29 following the team’s September 28 game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Johnson is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games.
Chris Snee was emotional at his press conference where he announced his retirement from the Giants after a ten year career that included two Super Bowl championships and multiple Pro Bowl appearances.
With the retirement Chris Snee, the Giants are forced to start over in putting a new offensive line together, while learning a new offense. Manning and his new protectors are looking at the positives of the situation they have been put into.
