The Philadelphia Eagles today announced they have signed WR Hank Baskett to a one-year contract.
“I’m glad we had a chance to get Hank back in Philadelphia,” said head coach Andy Reid. “Not only has he proven himself to be a productive receiver, but he also does a solid job on special teams. He’s a team player and his main focus has and always will be on helping his team win games. On top of all that, he’s a quality person.”
Added general manager Howie Roseman, “Hank adds solid depth to our wide receiving group, plus is a productive special teams player. He is a good teammate and obviously is a positive influence in the locker room and is a high-character person. We’re excited about welcoming he and his family back to the Eagles.”
Now in his second stint in Philadelphia, Baskett (6-4, 220) spent the majority of the 2009 season with the Indianapolis Colts after being released by the Eagles on September 15. He appeared in 12 regular season games (11 with Colts, one with Eagles), notching five receptions for 34 yards. He also played in all three playoff games for the Colts, including Super Bowl 44.
The 27-year-old Baskett owns three of the top ten longest plays in team history (90, 89 and 87 yard touchdowns). In 2006, he became the second rookie in NFL history to post two touchdown catches of 85-plus yards (89 and 87) in the same season since Green Bay’s Billy Howton did so in 1952. Baskett is also a proven performer on special teams, garnering the Eagles special teams MVP in 2007 after leading the team that year with 277 special teams production points.
Originally signed as a rookie free agent by Minnesota in 2006, Baskett was traded to the Eagles that same offseason for WR Billy McMullen. In his three seasons in Philadelphia from 2006-08, he totaled 71 catches for 1,046 yards and six touchdowns in 47 games (11 starts).
New Mexico’s leading receiver from 2004-05, Baskett earned all-conference honors as a senior after recording 67 receptions for 1,071 yards and nine touchdowns. A three-time all-conference selection in track, the two-sport star was also named the Mountain West outdoor high jump champion as a junior.
The Clovis, NM, native attended Clovis High School, where he earned all-state honors as a receiver and punter as a senior.
