EAGLES OPEN PRESEASON WITH WIN OVER JAGS

Kevin Kolb threw for 95 yards in debut as starter.

The first preseason game of an NFL team is usually nothing to write home about unless a key player gets hurt.

Last night’s game between the Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars was not only nothing to not write home about but nothing to write about at all.

Then again, considering the rate of injuries that have piled up during training camp at Lehigh University, the Birds 28-27 victory over the Jaguars was more than just a meaningless preseason win.

There were no significant injuries reported after the game.

“New Beginning” quarterback Kevin Kolb had some solid moments but did not get into the end zone.

The fourth-year signal caller played one quarter and was 6 of 11 for 95 yards, no TDs and no interceptions. His longest pass was to Jeremy Maclin for 29 yards. Kolb also connected with DeSean Jackson for two passes for 47 yards.

The Eagles led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter on David Akers field goals of 29 and 32 yards.

Kolb deemed his debut as starting quarterback a success.

“It was good,” Kolb said. “Obviously, when you get down into the red zone you want to score points, but both drives were successful. We racked up some yards there and put six points on the board, then had a chance with our third [drive]. Overall, I thought it was good, but we’ve got to get better in the red zone.”

Jackson also thought the new look offense was effective.

“It went pretty well,” the third-year receiver said. “The biggest thing about today was starting a new era, we had Kolb out there and we’re just starting something new and we’re having a good time. We’re all just coming together and having a lot of fun and just playing with a lot of energy. We’re young guys out there but we just do what we need to do.”

The Eagles lead reached 9-0 at the 6:45 mark of the second quarter on another Akers field goal.

The Jags made it 9-7 when seven-year Luke McCown hooked up with Troy Williamson for a 73-yard touchdown.

Now with Mike Vick in the game, the Eagles made the score 16-7 when they drove 65 yards for a score as Vick scampered in from the 10-yard line.

The Jags answered with another big play when McCown hit John Matthews with a 30-yard strike and that was the half and effectively the game.

McCown was outstanding for Jacksonville. The Veteran was 11 for 15 for 244 yards, three TDs and no interceptions.

Second year pro Martell Mallett led the Birds with 60 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown.

Vick finished with 119 yards through the air on 11 for 17 passing. He also rushed for 50 yards on six carries and a score.
