EAGLES END PRESEASON WITH WIN OVER JETS – CUT ROSTER TO 53
admin
Mike Vick survived the final cut.
When NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the fans had spoken about their distaste for the preseason, he must have been referring to a game like the Eagles-Jets played in front of an Arena League-level crowd at the New
Meadowlands Stadium known now as MetLife Stadium.
In a stadium at about 60 percent capacity, the Birds and Jets reserves went about their business of trying to make one final impression on their respective coaches and land a roster spot or a seat on the practice squad.
Offensively, Chad Hall looked solid hauling in a 16-yard touchdown pass from Vince Young; then fumbled away those good feelings by dropping the ball twice on punt returns, recovering one in the first quarter then losing another in the second quarter to Jets linebacker Eddie Jones Eagles 26-yard line.
The turnover led to a Jets 14-yard touchdown strike from Drew Willy to Scotty McKnight.
It was Willy’s first play from scrimmage.
Young is still trying to solidify his spot as the No. 2 guy on this team.
Mike Kafka, list as No. 3 has played very well in the opportunities he has been given.
The entire Eagles backup offense looked crisp following the Hall turnover, rolling 79 yards on 12 plays with Dion Lewis plunging into the end zone from the one to give the Eagles a 14-7 lead going into the half.
The Eagles depth at quarterback may have taken a hit in the second quarter when suffered a hamstring injury on a fourth and one at the Jets nine-yard line.
The Eagles depth had a major scare in the third quarter when Kafka took a monster but legal hit from linebacker Matthias Berning that looked he broke every rib in the your quarterback’s chest.
But Kafka as it turns out had the wind knocked out of him and after a timeout stayed in the game.
What happened in the fourth probably hurt more than Berning’s hit. On a third and 2 from the Jets 40-yard-line,
Kafka threw a ball intended for Johnnie Lee Higgins, instead the player making the catch for a pic-six was Ellis Lankster who raced 67 yards for his big moment.
With Young on the mend Kafka was asked if he was ready to be the backup on opening day September 11.
“Whatever coach Reid wants, whatever decision he makes, I will follow whatever role he has for me the best I can,” Kafka said. Tonight we go a “W” and that’s the biggest part of the night. There are things we can learn from and get better at and also learn from the preseason as a whole.”
